Woodstock: Forty Years After

Barry Z. LevineIt’s hard to believe that 40 years have passed since those days in August when 500,000 of us gathered in Max Yasgur’s field to celebrate our music, our bodies, our beliefs, and our lives.

Certainly much has changed for me.  Back then I was a bead-wearing, pot-smoking, long-haired hippie.  And now look!  What time hath wroth.

As this is written, I’ve published, along with my lover, a 154 page book, The Woodstock Story Book, an account in photographs and text of those wonderful days, and I invite you all to check it out on Amazon or at my website, www.WoodstockWitness.com.  It was clear to me, even as it was going on, that Woodstock was a special event, one that couldn’t be duplicated.  So my experiences were from the point of view of an on-stage photographer.  Those in the audience had a totally different point of view.  So let me know what you saw and felt.  And ask me any questions you might have.  I’ll do my best to answer all.

Enjoyed looking at this site. Superb photography, recording this historic event. I will be buying the book. Appreciate you could only be in one place at any given time, but wondering if you were present when those young people were interviewed for Wadleigh’s film? And if so, did you take any stills or get there personal details. It would be amazing, 40 years on to find out “where they are now”. With the passage of time, probably impossible to track them down, but wouldn’t that make a great photographic project.

    Mr. Levine -

I saw you today at the gift shop at the museum in Bethel….you were signing the book for a woman….when I got in the car on the way home back to Conn., I told my boyfriend about you..he was stunned and upset, that I didn’t buy the book and get it signed…he has been a big fan of your artwork for years….and I did’nt know that…..so needless to say, I am bumming big time…would have been the perfect ending to a perfect day….is there anyway I could get a signed book from you? I can’t even express to you how much it would mean to me.

I was with my girlfriend Amber when we met you & Linanne at the Bethel Woods museum when you signed our copy of your book. I carried it in my hands on our flight back to Tucson, Az and several people asked me about it and want copies also. Barry thanks to you & Linanne for a great book. God bless, Peace & Love.

My son and I met you and Linanne at the Mount Bethel Museum prior to your lecture at the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. I just want to let you know how much we enjoyed meeting you and hearing your first hand stories of your experiences. My son, Brian and I purchased your new pictorial book and enjoyed reading it as we made our way back to Atlanta. Thanks for making Woodstock 40th a memorable experience. Brian will never forget it.
